2012 R2 VMM Console fails to connect. ID: 2607

Hello,

When trying to login using the VMM console I get the following error.

"The SQL Server service account does not have permission to access Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

Ensure that the SQL Server service is running under a domain account or a computer account that has permission to access AD DS. For more information, see "Some applications and APIs require access to authorization information on account objects" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=121054.

ID: 2607”

This is a clean installation on Server 2012 R2. The setup is as the following;

-      VMM and SQL installed on same server

-      Domain user (not domain admin) is member of local administrators group on the VMM server

-      Domain user used for VMM service account

-      Domain user used for SQL service account

-      Domain user is DBOwner

What works;

Console login using the service account user on the local machine or remote machine

What fails;

Console login using any other user specified in the Administrator user Role of VMM

Any ideas?

Running VMM Console on Windows 10 Pro

Hi all,

Upgraded my Surface Pro 3 to Windows 10 Pro today, had VMM console working on the old 8.1 install but now, when I try to run it it comes up with the log in prompt, use the same credentials as previously but then it hangs at the grey Virtual Machine Manager splash screen.

Anyone seen this before and is there something I need to do to get my console working again on Windows 10 Pro?

Thanks in advance.

SCVMM Network Migration Query

Hi Frenz,

I have a Query regarding SCVMM Networking concept. My SCVMM Environment,

Version:      SCVMM 2012 R2
No. of Agent: 25 (standalone SCVMM Host - Win 2008 Server) + 6Node Cluster (Newly added Win2012 R2 DC edt)

I recently added my new 6 Node cluster to SCVMM and started migrating 70 VM running on stanalone Hyper-V Hosts (25). I trunked my New Hyper-V cluster host switch (XYZ) to allow all VLAN ID's in 25 Hyper-V Host. So far I migrated 5 VM's using Hyper-V Replica and in SCVMM I have added the Subnet site for all the 25 Hyper-V Host VLAN ID's and Subnet details to New Host Logical Network.

All the 05 VM's are started and running fine, but unable to ping the same not even the gateway from Self. Kindly suggest me a solution. If there any other better way to migrate the Network from Old to New Host.

Use VMM to Set "enable virtual hard disk sharing"

Hi,

Is it possible to use VMM/Powershell to set "enable virtual hard disk sharing" property for a virtual hard disk? I know the Failover Cluster Manager can set this but I would like to use VMM/Powershell for this. the virtual hard disk is located on a scaled-out file server cluster on a smb share. The smb share is controlled by vmm.

Thanx for helping me.

DJITS.

Ensure the agent is installed and running. Ensure the WS-Management service is installed and running, then restart the agent.

This happens for more then one template. The host was restarted before the deployment attempt. The service is running. Any ideas?

Are System Center VMM Update Rollups Cumulative?

$

Hi,

We've had this long running argument for years now on whether Microsoft Update Rollups are cumulative.

Part of our team believes they are while the other part thinks otherwise.

Adding confusion is the varied internet articles that aren't sure either. There are articles that say Microsoft Update Rollups ARE cumulative for some products while others seem to refute this.

Where it concerns VMM 2012 R2, we've been running Update Rollups at customer sites with the assumption that they ARE cumulative. For example, we recently installed Update Rollup 7 on a System Center VMM 2012 R2 UR5 installation with the assumption that the fixes for UR6 are already included in UR7.

Could someone for Microsoft settle this once-and-for all for all of us.

1. Are System Center VMM 2012 R2 Update Rollups Cumulative?

2. Are Microsoft Update Rollups in General Cumulative?

Thank you in advance for the feedback.

VM running really slow. Added a legacy network adapter that is disabled in the VM. Now the VM runs great.

We had a server VM with everything running really slow even though other server VMs configured just the same didn't have the slowness problem. Other server VMs on the same host didn't have the problem. If the NIC was disabled, the VM ran fine. After lots of troubleshooting and frustration, a tech used VMM to add a legacy NIC to the VM. The VM seems to run fine now.

However, the legacy NIC is disabled in the device manager of the VM. Do you know why a second NIC, which is disabled, would fix this issue?

Host: Windows Server Hyper-V 2012 R2

VMM Agent: 3.2.8071.0

VM: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, Generation 1

VM Guest Services: 6.3.9600.16384

NIC 1: connected to logical switch with teaming

NIC 2: Legacy NIC connected to logical switch with teaming

Thank you.

Optimize Hosts and Start Maintenance Mode Not working with warning (23756)

I have  a new 2012 Hyper-V3 cluster, with SCVMM 2012 SP1.

Putting a Server into maintenance mode used to work, it would live migrate all the virtual servers off the host and pause in the cluster.

Also the new Optimise Host Feature also used to work.

Now all I get is this :-

Warning (23756)
Changes have been made which should be verified by running placement again.

Recommended Action
Use the Refresh Preview action to run placement again.

you can manually live migrate all the VM's of the host then put it into maintenance mode and all works fine !.

I do not understand what this "use the Refresh Preview Action" is. I cannot find any reference to this anywhere.

hope someone can help

many thanks

VMM 2012 RC - Service Deployment Error 22591

When attempting to scale out a machine tier within a service I receive the following error:

Error (22591)
The specified computer name (WEB05) is already in use by another virtual machine or by a virtual machine configuration object.

Recommended Action
Ensure that the computer name is unique in the VMM environment, and then try again.

I've checked DNS, AD, VMM, etc but have not current record of this name in use. Each time I retry this operation, the number increments by one (using web## variable in service template) but returns the same error. Is this something wedged in the DB?

Adding IP Pool and Converting Dynamic to Static Pool

$

Hello,

This may be a dumb question but I figured I'd ask anyway. All of our VM's and Hosts are set to Dynamic because we go into the OS and set the static IP. If we add an IP Pool how do we go about converting the VM's to Static from the Pool and keep their same IP? I'm assuming Powershell but is there any script to reference?

Is System Center 2012 R2 - Configuration Analyzer 1.0 for VMM useful and valid for VMM 2012 R2 in 2015?

I am trying to determine the cause of errors deploying new VMs to a host. Some discussions suggested that the VMMCA might be able to shed light on the cause of the problem.

In trying to use VMMCA, I am getting several errors in the report, but I am not convinced that they represent actual problems, and I am beginning to suspect that VMMCA is perhaps outdated.

Any opinions on that?

-

The original error I am trying to eliminate is this:

Error (2915). The Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service cannot process the request. The object was not found on the server

-

In VMMCA I get this error for every server (VMM management, hosts, library):

“No required update or hotfix information exists for [server]

The VMMCA does not have a list of required hotfixes for the operating system of the specified server.

VMM may not function correctly or at all with the specified server (note that this does not apply to the VMM console, as the console can be installed in client operating systems and therefore this rule can be ignored).

If the computer is being used or will be used for any of the VMM server roles: host, library, PXE server, WSUS server, or VMM management server, ensure that it has a supported server operating system (Windows Server 2008 or a later version).”

All of the servers are running Windows Server 2012 R2 with all available updates from Windows Update.

I cannot find anywhere a list of recommended updates and hotfixes for VMM 2012 R2. So how should VMMCA be able to do this?

-

I also get this error in the VMMCA report for every host:

“The WMI virtualization store is in an unhealthy state on [server]

The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) virtualization store did not respond appropriately to a basic health test on the specified server.

VMM may not function correctly or at all with the specified server. You may see a "Not Responding" message in the VMM console or VMM operations on the server may fail.

Resolution:

1. Verify that the WMI service is running on the specified server by running the command net start winmgmt at a command prompt using elevated privileges

2. Ensure that the WMI virtualization store is in a healthy state on the specified server. To check the integrity of or to repair the virtualization store, run the command winmgmt /salvagerepository at a command prompt using elevated privileges

3. Ensure that all Hyper-V management services are in healthy state if the server is being used or will be used as a host. You may need to restart the following Hyper-V services: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management, Hyper-V Image Management, and Hyper-V Networking Management.”

With regard to the 3 steps for resolution:

  1. The WMI service is already running, so no point in net start.
  2. I do not want to run winmgmt /salvagerepository unless I am certain something is wrong. I tried winmgmt /verifyrepository which says “WMI repository is consistent”. So I think it looks ok despite the error.
  3. Again: I do not want to restart these services. There are vm’s running, which do important work. And I have rebooted the servers multiple times lately.

-

And finally I get this one error:

“VMM SPNs are incorrectly registered for [server name]

The Service Principal Names (SPNs) that VMM requires were not correctly registered when the VMM management server was set up on the specified server. This is a known issue in System Center 2012 – Virtual Machine Manager.

The VMM console may not be able to connect to the VMM management server and/or deploying a Hyper-V host to a bare-metal computer may not work.

Resolution:

Manually add the SPNs that are required by VMM by running the following commands as an administrator at an elevated command prompt:

1. setspn -S SCVMM/yourmachine -U domain\account

2. setspn -S SCVMM/yourmachine.fqdn.com -U domain\account”

The text mentions VMM 2012 – not VMM 2012 R2. So I am not convinced that it is a good idea to try to add the SPNs manually without verifying that something is actually wrong.

Force VM disks to live on specific disk classifications

$

Hello all,

I am trying to find a way to force a VMs operating system disk to live on one storage classification and have all its data disks live on another storage classification.  This is my environment...

SCVMM 2012 R2

2 x Hyper-V hosts

3 x 7K disk arrays SAS

2 x 10K disk arrays SAS

I have 2 Hyper-V hosts with 5 disk shelves connected via SAS. 2 shelves are 10K disks and classified as Sliver and 3 shelves are 7k disks classified as Bronze. Is there a way to force all OS disks to live on the Silver disks and have all subsequent disks to only live on the Bronze disks.  Currently I am building a VM with 3 disks then doing a manual storage migration to get the disk moved around which does not seem to be the most efficient.

Thank you.
