Port Classifications

I dont understand what Port Classifications are for?  When you create them they don't really create anything...just a name.  Also when deploying a logical switch to a host port classifications are not a requirement.

I understand port profiles which control network features (Offloading etc) and control QoS but what or how do I use Port Classifications??
